The research team conducted an extensive literature review on identifying, modeling, and managing shock events. The literature review examined a range of industries and academic disciplines, including the aviation and transportation industry, risk and decision analysis, management theory, the financial and insurance industries, as well as other network industries such as telecommunications and energy generation and distribution. The research team also consulted previous work commissioned by ACRP on risk, forecasting, and planning for the aviation industry to build upon the base of knowledge already developed in areas relevant to this research project.
The findings are based primarily on a review of industry publications and scholarly journal articles. It also leverages the collective knowledge and experience of the research team in the treatment of shock events. In some instances, the methodologies examined are related to uncertainty more generally rather than shock events specifically; these have been included as they can apply to shock events as well.
Details of the documents reviewed, including a summary of the contents, are provided in Appendix B.
