PART IV
Strategies to Manage Situations

Even the most tenured leader who hires impeccable staff and employs top-tier planning and forecasting of events will encounter unexpected scenarios. This is especially true in the unpredictable transportation sector, as any small hinderance, such as a traffic signal being down, can create wide-ranging impacts and must be resolved immediately. As in many organizations, leaders must frequently make fast decisions with imperfect information on pressing and emergent issues that may at times buck established procedures. There is no single step-by-step process that can assure good decisions for each set of circumstances, but there are strategies that can help decision-makers maneuver to reach a successful decision, even when confronted with these challenges. These strategies help decision-makers grapple with unexpected situations and elements outside leadersʼ control.
